New Jersey's State Bird is the American Goldfinch. Since 1913, it has been our state's bird. Fun fact: most people have never seen it!
The looks of a male American Goldfinch differ from the ones of the females. An adult male American Goldfinch are bright yellow, they also have a black forehead, black wings with white markings, and white patches above and beneath the Goldfinches tail. While adult female American Goldfinches are a duller yelow shade underneath their bodies and olive colored above. Both birds in winter are unstreked brown, with black-ish wings and two pale wingbars.
Ever wonder why a Goldfinch is named that way? The Goldfinch birds name is taken from an old English term describing the song of the birds' twitters.
